Evaluate

Criteria

The student evaluates the success of the product/solution in an objective manner based on the results of testing, and the views of the intended users. The student provides an evaluation of his or her own performance at each stage of the design cycle and suggests improvements. The student provides an appropriate evaluation of the impact of the product/solution

Appreciate

  • Solid baseline -bonus
  • 4 movements & 15+ minutes
  • to what degree have you used different styles/genres/types of music
  • Linkin Park? How effective?
  • Clarity of sound
I am very happy all together with my project. It was very fun and I started to realize that the project was very fun once you got into the mood and into the flow of working it was very fun to put the songs together. The first thing I needed to get was a general idea of what I wanted to do and from then on I was fine and it was 'easy'. I think my music is good but when I listened to some music that the other in the class made I wasn't as happy with it anymore. I am a realy music freak, I love listening to it and making it. Until before this project I could only play music, as in play the piano, sing, clarinet, base guitarre. But once I was put infront of the computer and had the challenge of generating music from other pieces and cutting them together with a computer program I felt like it was asked a little too much.  I personally think that making music ont he computer is a lot harder than learning hows to play an instrument and then ACTUALLY making music.  I believe my reflections and work on the criteria are not bad and I kept on track. Everytime I did something I wrote it down and then reflected on it and said what I did. I think I got a good translation from one rack and movement to another and I am happy with my work.

Create

Criteria

The student competently uses appropriate techniques and equipment. The student follows the plan and justifies any modifications made, resulting in a product/solution of appropriate quality using the resources available.

23rd April 2012
Today I set up my blog to keep track of my investigation, planning, creating and evaluating. I also just created the Timeline. I have not really thought about what I am going to put into my music piece, but that will come with time.

27th April 2012
Today I chose that I would put animal noises into my music piece so I looked for squirrel squeaking, lion roaring and bird singing. These are good sounds to put at the beginning of the song I recon.

11th May 2012
Today I started putting all the things together. I realized that it is very hard to put the beat together with other songs since it all has to have a kind of similar beat. Or it sounds off. I also downloaded a new drumbeat and two songs.

16th May 2012
Today I converted my 'catch' that will repeat itself and put it in. I also added another song.

18th May 2012
Today I downloaded three more songs and I finally got the binning of my song properly done so that I like it.

19th May 2012
Today I was listening to the Radio and got the titles of some nice songs that I want to include in my music. I downloaded those songs later. They were Kids with the Pumped up Kicks, A-Team and the Pirates of the Caribbean song.

20th May 2012
Since I downloaded the song off the movie the Pirates of the Caribbean and I added a really cool beat to it, put some parts of the trailer with it (I did this in a separate Audacity file).Now it sounds more like a techno piece. I don"t even know all the effects and other things I put and used on it but I just know that it sounds reeally cool :)

25rd May 2012
Today I put the songs together and chose some of them. I am really happy with how my music piece is looking.

29th May 2012
Today I tried some things out with putting some songs over each other but it didn't end so well. Sounded horrible. Now I just added two songs and am looking for cool sound effects I can put between the songs and a cool ending.

1st June 2012
I finally found some really cool sounds but my ending isn't that good. My music piece is finished now and I'm happy about that and with it.

I think I did well with creating my music piece. I kept on track and worked regularly. What I liked about this was that it was fun working and creating the house music. It was a little hard to put the songs together because the movements from one to another had to be smooth so they had to have a similar beat.

Plan

Criteria
The student produces a plan that contains a number of detailed, logical steps that describe the use of resources and time. The student critically evaluates the plan and justifies any modifications to the design.

Timeline

April 27 - bibliography due (including where you got your music samples)

April 30 - planning complete

June 1 - session complete

June 8 - evaluation complete

23rd April 2012
I am planning to check out some music beats so that I can have a beat into my music. I will most probably look for these on YouTube or I will just go to Google and give it in. Then maybe I will look at some websites such as SoundCloud that Clotilde told me about.

16th May 2012
Today I am planning to put some long songs on top of the beat I already have to make my music beat longer since until now I only have the beginning.

18th May 2012
Today I am going to continue what I was doing last class. Putting longer songs in to continue the piece, seemingly flowing.

19th May 2012
I am planning to find more songs today that I like and that I can put together.

20th May 2012
Today I will make the Pirates of the Caribbean song into a new version with effects, etc.

25rd May 2012
I want to finish the majority of the work today so that I can go more into the fine work.

29th May 2012
Today I am going to try some things out with putting some songs over each other. I will also think about some small details I can put in to make the music more interesting.

1st June 2012
I will finish the project today and add sound effects and a nice ending. Hope it sounds good at the end!

The planning time wasn't hard since I just had to write what I was planning to do. I guess I did good since a person can't really do bad on something like this.

Investigate

Criteria

The student explains the problem, discussing its relevance. The student critically investigates the problem, evaluating information from a broad range of appropriate, acknowledged sources. The student describes detailed methods for appropriate testing to evaluate the product/solution against the design specification.

Planning

20.02.2012
Today I want to get on with my planning. I will finish as much as I can in my plan so that I know exactly whatr I am going to do when in my documentary and for how long.

Week Planning 20.02.12 --> 26.02.12

This week I have to get my first video taping done. I am thinking about doing a few practice interviews with students from M5 and then maybe do 2 with some friends from other classes so I get comfortable with the whole interviewing-idea.
I will also finish my whole plan so that I know exactly what I have to do and how long ti is, what I am going to say, etc.

Evaluation

27th January 2012
Today I got some very good advertisements for block booking and travel agencies. I think I did well in choosing ones of which I can make fun of and also use as more information.

Planning

27th January 2012
Today I will look for video clips on plan-free trips. I will also look for clips or advertisements for or about travel agencies plus videos and advertisements about block booking. This will give me more information about the other kind of traveling and will help make my documentary less biased. Even though I will most probably be biased anyways :P

30th January 2012
Today I will take the time to find some pictures that I will put with captions in my video. I will also look at the connection between hippies and traveling without plans.

Full and Final Evaluation

These are the questions I asked my peers about my game after they played it. They were supposed to play my game and then answer the questions so that I would know what to do better.

1) Do you think the Spanish is understandable? Why?

2) What do you think of the world the game is based in?

3) Is it easy, hard or OK to understand what the player is supposed to do in the game?

4) What do you think was the purpose of this game?

5) Do you think that this game will help the player in real life? How?

These are the answers I got from different peers that answered my questions. Two people (Sonia and Matin) wrote their names on their answers so I knew who said what, but the other three people that answered me did not write their names so I have no idea who wrote it. (Person 3, Person 4, Person 5)

1) Do you think the Spanish is understandable? Why?
--> Yes, it was understandable because you gave the English translation.

--> The idea of the game was good and clear.
--> No, because i don't know Spanish

--> Yes, it did make sense in the beginning.... but then it gets very confusing after the fish.
--> Yes, it was understandable because you gave the English translation.

2) What do you think of the world the game is based in?
--> The world was colorful and pulled me into the game because it looked nice.

--> The controls were easy
--> It's nice
--> I'm not sure about how to answer this
--> The world was colorful and pulled me into the game because it looked nice.

3) Is it easy, hard or OK to understand what the player is supposed to do in the game?
--> It was kind of hard because im not used how to work with Kodu. Maybe you should have included a short instruction how to navigate Kodu/jump/pick up stuff/whatever Kodu is supposed to do in the game at the beginning.

--> The game didn't work perfectly but it was fun
--> Hard i don't know Spanish
--> It was okayish
--> It was kind of hard because I'm not used how to work with Kodu. Maybe you should have included a short instruction how to navigate Kodu/jump/pick up stuff/whatever Kodu is supposed to do in the game at the beginning.

4) What do you think was the purpose of this game?
--> To learn Spanish

--> I actually learned some Spanish
--> Learn Spanish
-->The game was about learning languages.

-->To learn Spanish

5) Do you think that this game will help the player in real life? How?
--> Maybe, if it had more levels.

--> A few more instructions would help, but I liked the idea of clues and things hiding.

--> Yes

--> The player will learn new vocabulary by different languages

--> Maybe, if it had more levels.

Helping

At the beginning of this Game making Unit, I was very preoccupied with finishing my game. I finished the first level and was very happy with myself. When I was okay with the way my game looked Katharina Schoenhagen came up to me and asked me to help her since she had no idea how to make her game. I helped her. In the end her game (which I did a lot of 'helping' with) was a lot better than mine. This was a little annoying but just proves that with time and practice your skills grow. I am happy I got to help Katharina and that I witnessed me getting better at game making.

What I think
I think that the game I did made a good impact on Spanish students. If I would finish it completely with more than one level, then it would be a great thing for the language students since it would not only teach the language Spanish, but also other languages like German and French. The language students could and can study their vocabulary and so get better at talking in that language.

The Different Stages of the Design Cycle
  • At the beginning when I was in the Investigation part of my Project I think I did well. I looked at different websites that explained Kodu. Those websites are on this blog as well under the Label 'Kodu Game'. I Investigated the different kinds of games you can do with Kodu and what topics I could do.
  • At the second stage of the Design Cycle, Design, I started thinking about what topic my game should be about. I came up with different things that I wanted to teach other people. How to go on vacation without plans and languages. I then chose languages, since I had literally no idea on how to do the traveling idea and put it into a game.
  • At the third stage of the Design Cycle, Plan, I actually thought about how I was going to put my idea of languages into a game. I threw away most of the ideas I had because I had no idea how to put them into a game, but I kept my language idea and thought about making each level a different language. I think that was a good idea and that I went through the planning very well.
  • At the fourth stage of the Design Cycle, Create, I think I did good again. I made the first level, which was good but a little confusing for some of the players. I am a little sad that I did not ake more than one level, but I think it is good that I at least got one done.
